Blacksmith John Wellington (William Farnum) flees from Virginia when he kills two men in a quarrel, leaving behind his young son, John, Jr.(Barry Downing as a boy, Johnny Mack Brown as a man), who is reared by Sir George Thorne (Lloyd Ingraham), the towns richest citizen, as it was in Thornes defense that Wellington became involved. The adult Johnny goes to New Mexico searching for Thornes daughter who married a guy named Winters (Frank Ball) against her fathers will. The daughter has died and Winters, at this moment known as Gentry, occupies a ranch with their daughter Gale (Beth Marion.) Johnnys father, at this moment using the name of Rand, is head of an outlaw gang, but friendly to the Gentrys. Johnny eventually discovers that Gale is Thornes grand-daughter, and Rand comes to realize that Johnny is the son he was forced to abandon years ago. Trent (Earl Dwire) and his gang of outlaws surround the cabin wehre Johnny, his father and Gale have taken refuge.
